We at havi.fun make robotic toys and encourage and support educators who use toys in their teaching methods. Here we are drafting a summer camp guide to all those eductors who wish to bring robotics and STEAM learning to children. The guide is meant for free circulation and anyone can use and execute a robotic summer camp using this guide.

What’s in this guide?

Havi Elements summer camp guide includes

  • List of resources required
  • Curriculum Overview
  • Schedules
  • Tips & troubleshoot

Let’s dive in.

Resources required

1. Havi Elements – DIY Robotics Starter Kit

Havi Elements DIY Robotics Starter Kit contains 8 Havi Elements + 17 accessories. It includes 2 sensors, 3 outputs, 2 processors along with 1 power. The kit works on a rechargeable power bank that comes along with the kit.

You can ask each of your students to purchase the kit from here. The other option is a teacher/ school purchases and keeps reusing the kits for their other students. You can comfortably manage 6 students with 4 kits.

Facilitator is advised to have at least one extra kit for building sample creations, backup, and demonstrations.

2. Craft material

The basic craft material like project templates, paper straws, skewers, ice cream sticks, and double-sided tape come along with the kit. But you will need them more and in addition to that, manage for the following too.

  • Craft papers
  • Cardboard
  • Construction papers
  • Cutters/Scissors
  • Glue
  • Colors/Pen/Scale etc.
  • Thermocol sheets

Curriculum Overview

The printed manual along with online video links are already provided in the kit. However, you can always contact us for teachers’ training & resources as and when required during the summer camp.

The Havi Elements summer camp is divided into 4 sections:

1. Introduction to Robotics
2. Introduction to Havi Elements
3. Guided challenges
4. Open challenges

1. Introduction to Robotics

Duration: 1 hour

The first section focuses on introducing robotics to kids. It includes the concepts of electronics, mechanics, and logic in robots. Children will understand what robots & robotics are.

2. Introduction to Havi Elements

Duration: 1 hour

This section will let the children know about the working of Havi Elements and accessories with hands-on training.

3. Guided challenges

Guided challenges include step-by-step instructions to make specific creations with photos and videos. Facilitators can use them to help children to make the creations. You can divide the camp content in three groups.

Beginner

Duration:
5 hours of creation and making time.
3 hours of play and exploration time.

Creations they make:

Activity: Children will write down what other creations they can make using Havi Elements.

Create: Teachers will throw open challenges to children to make specific projects from their ideas.

Play: Children will play with their creations and interact with others.

Intermediate

Duration:
6 hours of creation and making time.
4 hours of play and exploration time.

Creations they make:

Activity: Children will write down what other creations they can make using Havi Elements. The sensor worksheet will be provided to children and they will fill up it using hands-on experience.

Create: Teachers will throw open challenges to children to make specific projects from their idea.

Play: Children will play with their creations and interact with others.

Advanced

Duration:
12 hours of creation and making time.
4 hours of play and exploration time.

Creations they make:

Activity: Children will write down what other creations they can make using Havi Elements.

Create: Teachers will throw open challenges to children to make specific projects from their idea.

Play: Children will play with their creations and interact with others.

Teachers can use blogs & videos to teach and execute the projects.

4. Open challenges

Open challenges are the creations where the kids need to think, experiment and implement their ideas. Each of the levels will have open challenges where the educator will throw a creative challenge and children will make them either alone or in groups.

Suitable time allocation for open challenges under each level.

  • Beginner: 1 hour
  • Intermediate: 2 hours
  • Advance: 4 hours

Batch size and timings

Here is the summary of the timings under each level.

Beginner:
Introductions: 2 + Creations and play: 8 + Open challenge: 1 = 11 hours

Intermediate:
Creations and play: 10 + Open challenge: 2 = 12 hours

Advanced:
Creations and play: 16 + Open challenge: 2 = 18 hours

Kids can start with beginners and reach an advanced level. Teachers can evaluate the open challenge and issue a certificate too.

The ideal batch size is 6 children with 1 facilitator.

Important tips

  • Teachers can use Havi.co’s blog & videos and customize the class as per their need.
  • Teachers/parents can extend the model even after summer camp and convert it to a full fledged robotics class model as well.
